Dzogchen Monastery in Tibet was founded in 1684 by Pema Rigdzin, the 1st Dzogchen Rinpoche, an eminent Dzogchen master, considered to be the personification of the Dzogchen teachings. Many celebrated scholars studied at the Shri Singha Shedra, the academic college of Dzogchen Monastery and the retreat centre was home to many great Dzogchen masters, including Paltrül Rinpoche, author of the great spiritual classic The Words of My Perfect Teacher.

The gradual destruction of Dzogchen Monastery in Tibet began in the 1950’s and continued throughout the Cultural Revolution. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, requested that His Eminence Dzogchen Rinpoche and his father, Tsewang Paljor, re-establish Dzogchen Monastery in South India. The construction work was guided by Tsewang Paljor, who was an expert in traditional Tibetan architecture and geomancy.

Dzogchen Monastery, South India is today home to 200 monks and is a thriving centre of dharmic activity. Officially inaugurated in 1992, by H.H. the Dalai Lama it has hosted auspicious teachings from many great lamas, including all the heads of the four main schools of Tibetan Buddhism, H.H. Penor Rinpoche, H.H. Sakya Trinzin and H.H. the 17th Karmapa. Through Dzogchen Rinpoche’s continuous commitment to preserve the Dzogchen lineage, Dzogchen Monastery Temple is being refurbished according to the ancient Indian architectural methods that were used in the design for the heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora caves in India.
